There is no light. Students use kerosene lamps and candles to study and move around. The stench from the common toilet is so putrid that students cover their faces with blankets and sleep.

21 April, 2009 - Imagine a planned program where preschoolers in a daycare school in Bhutan work on the same syllabus as preschoolers half a world away, in the United States.
This is just what Carla Raynor, family literacy coordinator at Kishwaukee college, Illinois, envisioned when she designed a class exchange program for a Montessori school in Bhutan ÂB4Â - which stands for Books and Basics Bound for Bhutan. [read more]

One such woman is Tashi Wangmo, 49, of Yogpaling gonpa under Metsho gewog. Locals believe that she has caused many deaths. Tashi is thus feared and ostracised by the whole community. [read more]

20 April, 2009 - Firefighters, hundreds of police officials and local residents battled a massive blaze at the Bhutan oil corporation (BOC) fuel depot on April 14 in Samdrup Jongkhar, which destroyed a fuel tanker truck and severely injured two men. [read more]
20 April, 2009 - The shortage of health professionals remains the most pressing issue in the country but the health ministry is doing what it can to bridge the gap, say health officials.
In a three-day annual health conference held in Thimphu, Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley said that the need for curative health care and demand was growing. ÂAgainst this, there is an acute shortage of qualified medical professionals.Â

20 April, 2009 - The 1.15-acre mesh-wire fenced Memelakha dog pound enclosure, which was overcrowded with dogs just a few months ago, is now empty and silent.
After two years of chaos, the dog pound was emptied off the last batch of impounded dogs on Wednesday. A total of 80 impounded dogs were shifted to the Serbithang dog shelter. [read more]
