2 July, 2008 - A national environment commission (NEC) study found that water collected from some streams in Phuentsholing, Samtse, and Pasakha and also Serbithang (outer Thimphu) had unusually high quantities of lead, a heavy metal, which is injurious to health.

RENEW Centre inaugurated

2 July, 2008 - The president and founder of RENEW, Her Majesty Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck, and the Indian ambassador, Sudhir Vyas, formally inaugurated the RENEW Centre in Thimphu on June 30.

RENEW, an acronym for Respect, Educate, Nurture, and Empower Women, was formally established in 2004 with financial support from UNFPA. RENEW’s objective is to provide much needed support and services to disadvantaged women, girls and their families. Among other essential functions, the Centre will provide crisis intervention for victims of domestic violence, including professional counselling and referral services.

The centre was constructed with financial support from the government of India.
