9 January, 2008 - There are hundreds of ways to celebrate the 100 Years of Monarchy in Bhutan and five students of Sherubtse College in Kanglung chose to walk.
The students walked their ÂCentenary Walk for 21 days from Kanglung to Thimphu following the ancient route.
Monk commits suicide
9 January, 2008 - A 37-year-old monk from Haa was found hanging from a tree near Tashichhodzong on the morning of January 4.
According to the Thimphu hospitalÂs forensic expert, Dr Pakila Dukpa, who examined the body, the suicide took place between 6.00 am and 7.00 am.

9 January, 2008 - The trial of the five soldiers of the Royal Bhutan Army - who were alleged to have gang raped a 16-year-old Bhutanese girl on July 2 last year - began this week in Thimphu district court.
The case was filed on January 1 by the Thimphu Royal Bhutan Police.

UPDATE 9 January, 2008 - They are running to raise funds for poor Bhutanese children.
The team was joined by a dog from Trashigang, which they have named Yana. wearing a red shirt with ÂRun for the Kids, Donate for the Kids written on it, Yana joined the run from Trashigang. According to one of the lecturers, Nadya Ladoucer, they gave the name Tara to the run and Yana to the dog, which accompanied them.

9 January, 2008 - Students, who joined the VAST winter programme, rock climb in Thimphu on December 30 with guidance from professional climbers of the Bhutan Climbing Club. Thirty students aged between 8-19 years, mostly from schools in Thimphu, took part in the VAST activity from December 24 to January 5. The programme held art classes everyday and also introduced students to digital photography and computer graphics. Rock climbing was one of the weekend activities.
The programme ended with a small art exhibition for parents of the children who took part in the programme.

9 January, 2008 - International observers at the National Council election on December 31 described BhutanÂs election as being Âfree and fairÂ. The UN system had the largest presence and, after observing a number of polling booths, described it as a well organized election. The Chief Election Commissioner of Manipur, who is used to election problems on a massive scale, including violence, thought it was an ideal election. The U.S. government made it a point to congratulate Bhutan in the international press.

She segregates big mandarins from small and arranges them in neat heaps for the open auction later in the day.

7 January, 2008 - It could well have been likened to a Âlamentable comedy as Shakespeare would have put it. That is, the National Council elections. Yet given a nationÂs first foray into democracy, the hiccups could well be forgiven. On the whole, it was a smooth affair even if every voter didnÂt show. More pertinently, the euphoria of victory and the bitter aftertaste of defeat bring to the fore issues relevant to the National Assembly elections, the campaign of which will begin in earnest. Campaign and not familiarization, although the distinction has in the interim become rather murky.
