COMMENTARY 21 January, 2008 - Gross National Happiness (GNH) isnÂt everyoneÂs cup of tea - especially those who have to think twice about where the sugar or milk is going to come from. And that is what distinguishes rhetoric from reality. Conceptually speaking, GNH is perhaps the highest goal that any nation can aspire for. Yet, when one person out of every four exists, or persists, below the poverty line, it remains a lofty goal. From South America to India
Potato had to travel from South America through India to Bhutan. Although at that time there were no legal barriers to the transfer of planting materials, the journey was not easy. Tubers, the conventional planting material, would have been highly perishable. If carried as seed, the plants produced would have been highly variable, requiring repeated selection to get suitable material.

But Bon actually constitutes more than that.
