26 December, 2007 - The first parliamentary election is only five days away but observers are yet to see a significant movement of Thimphu residents heading for their villages to vote during the National Council election on December 31.

27 December, 2007 - The anxiety over the outcome of the December 31 polls is beginning to get to the National Council candidates.

In the southern dzongkhag of Samtse the four aspiring councilors seem to have lost weight and look weary from the last minute campaigning. One candidate fainted just before appearing for the public debate on BBSC TV.

27 December, 2007 - Private transport operators have arranged about 16 additional bus services to Phuentsholing, Mongar, Gelephu, Samtse and Trashigang to facilitate the flow of people travelling from Thimphu.

Arrangements are usually made during peak season (winter) with an exodus of people leaving on pilgrimage and students on vacation.

Marijuana induced murder, say police
27 December, 2007 - Dagana police have charged a 24-year-old man with voluntary manslaughter, after he stabbed to death a 35-year-old co-worker on December 23.

Police believe that Deo Kumar Mongar was under the influence of marijuana when he murdered Kalu Bahadur Tamang.

26 December, 2007 - The Druk Phuensum Tshogpa are in the capital for a three-day executive committee meeting, which began on December 24. The 40 candidates out of 47 constituencies are discussing the draft manifesto and strategies in preparation for the 2008 elections.

Council elections – many challenges

26 December, 2007 - National Council candidates need to not only persuade voters to vote for them, they will need to urge people to actually come out and vote. There are a number of distractions that might keep Bhutanese voters away from the polling booths, even if it is the first time in the country’s history.
