31 August, 2007 - Working overtime almost everyday has become a way of life for Tek Bahadur Subba, the principal of Tshengkharla Middle Secondary School in Khamdang, Trashiyangtse.

It began when he was posted as a teacher of a remote boarding school in eastern Bhutan. Apart from teaching 35 periods a week, he had additional responsibilities like supervising morning and evening studies and co-curricular activities. This went on 10 years. “I loved every moment of it,” recalled the principal.

In a judgment passed on August 24, the full bench of the High Court upheld the verdict passed by bench II, which had sentenced the former coordinator for the bio-mass briquette project of the National Women Association of Bhutan (NWAB), to six and a half years in prison on June 21 this year.

The examining medical officer, Dr. Pakila Dukpa, described the deceased as someone aged between 50-70 years, 165 cm (5Â’5Â’Â’) tall, bald sparse white goatee and a stocky physique.

BHU boon for Dramphel

30 August, 2007 - A bustling construction site is not always an eyesore and the people of Dramphel would back that view.
The construction of the Grade II basic health unit (BHU) in the village means that villagers will not have to walk five hours to Wangdichholing hospital in Chamkhar. “We are deprived of health facilities most of the time because of the distance,” said Dema Tshomo, 56. “Illnesses like diarrhoea, aches or even deep cuts are treated at home.”

His Majesty the King granted the Royal Scarf to His Royal Highness Dasho Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck at a simple ceremony yesterday on August 28.

The Royal Scarf symbolises “Lifelong commitment to the service of the king, country and people.”

According to tradition, princes and princesses of the Druk Gyalpo wear the white scarf. This practice represents the pursuit of knowledge and attainment of the values of simplicity, humility and equality until such age when they begin the work of “fulfilling their sacred duty of service to the nation and people.”

His Royal Highness, Dasho Jigyel, was born in 1984. He studied in Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School, completed high school in Choate Rosemary Hall, USA, and graduated this year from Oxford University, United Kingdom.

His Royal Highness would have graduated a year earlier, but had returned to Bhutan during the first year of college to join the militia for the military operations in 2003.

Recently, a short-circuit in a building near the Bhutan Oil Distributor left the city in darkness for about an hour because wires were left strewn without properly coiling them.
With the boom in construction, what seems foremost in the minds of contractors is not the safety of workers but meeting deadlines.

Bhutanese Scholarship in Thailand

2007, August 24: Rangsit University in Thailand and the Royal Civil Service Commission signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a scholarship in the name of the Trongsa Penlop.

Under the scholarship, Rangsit University will provide 15 scholarships, 5 for master’s degree and 10 for bachelor’s degree every year for ten years. The scholarships will commence next year with formal coronation of His Majesty the King.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by the President of the Rangsit University, Dr. Arthit Ourairat and the RCSC Secretary Dasho Bap Kezang on August 23.

Apart from the 15 scholarships for masters and bachelors degree courses, the Rangsit University has also pledged to offer 30 certificate level short courses annually for next ten years. For the first year, coinciding with the coronation of His Majesty the King, the university will offer 10 additional scholarships for bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

The scholarship will cover tuition fees, boarding facilities, and medicinal and living expenses.

Speaking to the Bhutanese media, the President of the Rangsit University Dr. Arthit Ourairat said Bhutan and Thailand has so many things in common.

Also Speaking to the Bhutanese media, the RCSC Secretary Dasho Bab Kesang said the courses will be selected based on the changing needs in Bhutan.

Under the MOU, the two parties will review the program annually.

So far, 17 Bhutanese students have already graduated from the University and about 26 students are currently studying in the University through private funding. The scholarship is for both public and private sectors.
